Rocket science? Now its up to anyone to simulate before going for a new business model

London 2011-07-12

In fine company Ortelius represent Sweden in one of Europe’s most prestigious business awards, the European Business Awards.

Operations where large sums are at stake, both human and financial, it is crucial to simulate and test before an expensive drill bit set in the ground, sending a satellite into orbit or begins transplanting new types of organs. To simulate is normally complex and cost much money and intended only for the big players.

Now we can offer this to anyone,  by Ortelius groundbreaking innovation and methods. - We create simulation models of a business that now can be tested and analyzed before they are put into practice. That the idea is right is once more confirmed by a new award, this time in the form of being selected among more than 15,000 companies to the European Business Awards representing Sweden, says Ortelius CEO Ulf Jensen.

Simulation of a complex enterprise, which can be anything from manufacturing to a specific hospital, ensure that customers are using their resources much more efficiently, says Ulf.  Through all the experience of improvement work over the years, we know that when an employee in an organization gets an opportunity to see and understand more of how things fit together, they will begin to test and analyze new opportunities to improve their environment. Ortelius have created this opportunity and also makes sure that there is much more coordinated.

Knowledge intensive organizations formly leak like a “sieve” today, says Ulf. Studies show that the most expensive and most talented employees do 80% of their time searching for and sorting information, before they become useful. In one of our customers, we could confirm that 75% of their 7000 employees are by definition pure knowledge workers, and then you can understand yourselv the enormous potential we stand before.

The secret lies in being able to capture and organize business information that is embedded in the brains of the knowledge worker, implemented in IT systems and all the external information, in a much more efficient manner. It ends up creating a clarity in how things fit together. It also ensures that all the investments made in IT systems over the years will deliver a much higer ROI.

Ortelius have created entirely new conditions for how a modern business must work with their business development process. We have established working methods and technology in order to go from idea to action with speed without sacrificing quality – because we can simulate the future today.

European Business Awards sponsored by HSBC and is an independent award that is designed to recognize and promote excellence, best practice and innovation in European industry. EBA representatives are companies that can demonstrate commercial success and this year over 15,000 companies in over 30 countries examined to find the winners.

Ortelius simulerar nya vär(l)den!

London 2011-07-12

Ortelius Management is selected as Red Herring Top 100 Europe – Tech Startup

Amsterdam Netherlands, 30 May 2011

Red Herring announced its Top 100 award in recognition of the leading private companies from Europe, celebrating these startups’ innovations and technologies across their respective industries.

Red Herring’s Top 100 Europe list has become a mark of distinction for identifying promising new companies and entrepreneurs. Red Herring editors were among the first to recognize that companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, Skype, Salesforce.com, YouTube, and eBay would change the way we live and work.

“Choosing the companies with the strongest potential was by no means a small feat,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “After rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed our list down from hundreds of candidates from across Europe to the Top 100 Winners. We believe Ortelius Management embodies the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture. Ortelius Management should be proud of its accomplishment, as the competition was very strong.”

Red Herring’s editorial staff evaluated the companies on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, management quality, strategy, and market penetration. This assessment of potential is complemented by a review of the track record and standing of startups relative to their sector peers, allowing Red Herring to see past the “buzz” and make the list a valuable instrument of discovery and advocacy for the most promising new business models in Europe.

Pilot project at Karolinska University Hospital

August 21, 2008

Ortelius has delivered a pilot clinical “control card” installation to Karolinska University Hospital as part of an initiative to improve the hospital’s approach to quality. The control card was designed using Ortelius’ GCS innovation based on the Inorigo platform.

“The Qlean project represents an important aspect of Karolinska’s Health Care of the Future Through Science and Development vision,” says project owner Daniel Andersson of SVU. “Sustainable information structures represent an important step towards creating the health care system of the future.”

The Qlean project represents a collaboration between Ortelius and Karolinska University Hospital’s Strategic Operational Development (SVU) unit and was carried out during the spring of 2008 under the supervision of project leader Lena Mattsson of SVU. The project will serve to support hospital-wide operational objectives through:

  • Updating and highlighting of information in the quality register
  • Ensuring the integrity of information in the quality register
  • Creation of action plans for improving quality

The Qlean project was initially limited to three registers: RIKS-HIA, RIKS-HÖFT and RIKS-STROKE. In addition, a pilot clinical “control card,” an aid to operational decision-making, has been designed. The project goals were:

  • Creating an informational model for quality register data.
  • Specifying a file structure for standardized importation of files from the quality register.
  • Developing an XML scheme for data transfer.

Ortelius Enterprise Structure Modeling (ESM) methodology was used in implementing the project. Ortelius Live Modeling methodology was employed in workshop contexts to obtain operational feedback with regard to the informational model.

The project concluded with provision of the following to Karolinska:

  • An information management model for storing information from the quality register
  • Installed database tables for storing information from the quality register in accordance with the informational model.
  • An XML scheme (XSD files) for specifying a file structure for data transferred from the quality register to the database tables.
  • A pilot version of a clinical “control card” for the Department of Cardiology.

Comments about the project:

“The Qlean project represents an important aspect of Karolinska’s Health Care of the Future Through Science and Development vision,” says project owner Daniel Andersson of SVU. “Sustainable information structures represent an important step towards creating the health care system of the future.”

Important findings that will require action at the hospital level include:

1. Data from the quality register is of little use to day-to-day clinical operations
2. The variables tracked in the quality register fail to reflect follow-up needs.
3. The pace of follow up is much too slow.
4. Multiple entries are far too common – all of the information is already present in clinical records.

“Once again, Ortelius has shown that its way of working and Generic Core Structures (GCS) innovation is capable of creating sustainable, flexible information systems solutions geared to evolving operations in a short time,” says Karin Forsberg of Ortelius.

“Decision-making support in the form of a clinical ‘control card’ provided new insights with regard to proactive control and follow-up of routine health care operations, thereby creating opportunities for improving efficiency,” says project owner Daniel Andersson of SVU.
