We release the collaborative brain-power of companies
Ortelius co-founder Stefan was raised on a farm in Dalsland, Sweden. Even at a young age, he was passionate about discovering better ways in which to do his job. At first this was a personal desire, but soon became a worthy cause to help others. Today he is proud to bestow upon Ortelius customers ”super powers”, in the form of the inorigo® software platform. Meet Stefan Dageson.
”I guess I was not an easy student. I often challenged my teachers and professors with thoughts and ideas not aligned with the school books. That still has not changed as I always want to think ahead with regard to how we develop our customers’ knowledge work and information models,” says Stefan Dageson, CTO and co-founder of Ortelius.
After travelling the world and graduating from Gothenburg University with a degree in system engineering in 1988, Stefan kicked off his career as a trainee at ABB. Even at this stage, Stefan worked long hours to build an ambitious application for information modelling. His next venture was with Tetra Pak in Lund where Stefan spent four years building the same dream-tool. In both cases, Stefan was a little ahead of his time and both projects became valuable stepping-stones for his future invention of Ortelius’ inorigo® software.
”I have always been very excited about building ways of modulation. To create a model and system that can depict reality in a tool is challenging, but deeply valuable when trying to describe an abstract business-world. When we bring inorigo® to our customers it’s like handing them a super-power of their own. We give them the tool so they can work much smarter, with a common ”language”, to reach a new level of collaborative brain-power,” says Stefan.
The birth of Ortelius and inorigo®
In 1998, after four years working as a consultant for Oracle, Stefan found his ”flock”. Meeting up with the founders of Netpuls, where Ortelius co-founder Ulf Jensen and other founders worked, Stefan could finally start to build his dream – inorigo®.
”To ‘elevator pitch’ the beauty of what we do at Ortelius is challenging. I realize some people struggle to understand what we do, and that’s natural. No one else does what we do so we need to educate the world about what we can do with our knowledge platform inorigo®. One way of putting it is to say that we help people and companies to work smarter, much smarter. We’re fighting a war against inefficiency, and want knowledge workers to have more time for creativity and innovation.”
Having been a somewhat demanding student, thinking outside of the box from an early stage, Stefan draws a direct link from school to today’s corporate business.
”It doesn’t matter if we talk about the school system or a major corporation. People need to be able to have room for creativity and innovation. Also, business people need to be creative. Since Our methods and software give them a powerful information advantage that they can use to modulate, simulate and launch a brighter future for their companies,” says Stefan.

”I am 100 percent devoted to Ortelius and our product inorigo®. Not because someone tells me to be, but because I love what we do for our customers. We are a part of a really powerful change in how people and companies work smarter.” Needless to say, Tove Nilstun is a true brand ambassador for Ortelius ever since she came onboard 12 years ago. However, she admits it was not an easy ride from the start!
”Since what we do is so genius it is also complicated at first sight. I admit it took me almost a year to really grasp the full potential of our ”corporate brain-platform” inorigo®. Since I am now a veteran of this game I make sure our new recruits get the hang of the beauty of our platform faster than I did,” Tove says with laughter.
After studying System Development at Lund University, Tove worked for four years as a programmer at Tetra Pak in Lund, and then five years as a consultant for Sigma Exallon. When Tove started at Ortelius in 2006, she went from a very large corporation to a small startup company – Ortelius, with its new focus on inorigo®, the corporate brain software.
”I realized Ortelius was on to something really big with its software and vision to make organizations collaborate better and smarter. I soon realized this was not developed anywhere else in the world and I was deeply intrigued by the possibilities. To map out the capabilities of a company, give the knowledge workers a common language and help them work way more effectively is a vision I share, and even since my first day at work, I’ve loved it,” says Tove.
Think out of the box… for real
When explaining the beauty of what Ortelius does for its quickly growing customer base, Tove often comes back to philosophy and language skills. She explains:
”For some, it may sound surprising, however, philosophy is at play when we build our Business Universal Models. It’s a really intellectual work process where we try to understand reality as close as possible before we model it. Our unique mapping of capabilities enables a form of communication that somewhat resembles what’s happening in the human brain, with its synapses constantly trading valuable information across the cells. I know it sounds a bit scientific and also philosophical, but that’s what’s so great with Ortelius if you ask me”, Tove says.
Tove also states the importance of organizations using the same language and terms to get the “corporate brain” to blossom and build tangible value. Similar to a football field, it’s important that all players and the coach use the same language when deciding on their strategy, and also when they are just communicating with each other on the field. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t stand a chance of winning. But most people don’t think like that when it comes to businesses.
”At the end of the day, my favourite moment at work is really when we explain to customers how much smarter they can be and how much that will strengthen their business. When I see their eyes light up and sparkle with excitement, that’s when they realize what we can do for them. Sometime later when the project is deployed we are heroes in their minds and that’s a cool feeling, trust me,” Tove explains with pride.
She found her ”tribe” at Ortelius
Being the head of Product Development, Tove is at the core of Ortelius evolution. The inorigo® platform is Ortelius’ unique software that aims to make a historic mark in the evolution of businesses. Just as Abraham Ortelius in 1564 presented the first map of the world. Similarly, as the map enabled sailors to navigate the oceans and reach new frontiers and goals, Ortelius’ software inorigo® enables businesses to navigate pathways to reach new goals.
”Ortelius is really my tribe. It sounds a little crazy but I am devoted to our products 24/7. I realize that I am passionate but that’s what happens when one gets to work with great stuff and really nice people I guess. In my career, never before have I worked with so many interesting and collaborative people. We have lively and intellectual conversations, also at lunches and fikas, and that’s important to me as an individual. Paired/Combined with the fact that we are changing the way companies and people work to a much higher degree are factors that make Ortelius a very motivating workspace.”

Five years after graduating with a master’s degree in Informatics at Lund University, Ferdia Kehoe looks back at a life-changing period in his life. He is now father to a four-year-old son and celebrates five years with Ortelius. Meet Ferdia Kehoe, Ortelius’ award-winning Information architect.
”I have taken a slightly unusual route into Information architecture. As much as I enjoyed my early years studying language and literature at University College Dublin, it didn’t leave me particularly employable,” Ferdia says with laughter. ”Moving to Sweden six years ago with the love of my life was a true turning point since I got a Master in Informatics, won an award for the best informatics thesis 2013, got a great job at Ortelius… and had a son!”.
Before Ferdia moved to Sweden, he first worked in marketing in London before spending seven years with the Irish National Transport Authority. The opportunity to build databases and IT processes shaped Ferdia’s interest in information architecture, which significantly impact people and businesses.
Information infrastructure that matters
Today, Ferdia is extremely busy designing sustainable information models for Ortelius’ clients. Apart from his colleagues, who he really likes, his best work-mate is the inorigo® software platform. In addition to adapting it to his clients’ needs, he uses inorigo® at every stage of his work.
”Structure is a nerdy enjoyment of mine,” says Ferdia. ”I really enjoy building information models and I would find it hard to go back to a work life that did not include inorigo® as it allows me to test and challenge my ideas”.
As the information architect, Ferdia is close to the customer and really gets to the core of clients’ needs and opportunities.
”From the very first workshop with the client it’s important I establish what their desired outcome is and how we can achieve that. The beauty of inorigo® is that you can come at a complex requirement from many different angles, solving smaller problems along the way and deliver value quickly.”
Make companies smarter
Working with some of the largest companies in Sweden and abroad gives Ferdia a unique insight into the very core of huge corporations. He digs deep into their processes and databases and has come to a somewhat surprising conclusion.
”Many companies are more alike on the inside than I anticipated, almost identical. All companies sell products, run projects, manage employees and so on but they are fighting in the very same battle against poor collaboration, low information quality and insufficient knowledge usage. Everyone is wasting time, solving the same problem. Capturing and reusing what is repeatable within these information patterns, so we can spend more time focusing on the things that make a company unique, is something Ortelius does very well. It’s exciting to introduce our ”corporate brain” platform, and I work with customers that have saved tens of millions of kronor in one year by using inorigo®. It’s actually quite sensational and I see no direct competitor on the market,” says Ferdia.
And five years after Ferdia came on board with Ortelius, the inorigo® platform has evolved tremendously, he says.
”It’s a fantastic platform for sustainable information models and what suits me is that it is actually not very technical to work with. Instead, I would say it’s important that one can understand information modelling on a conceptual level and use your imagination to apply it to real scenarios using inorigo®. We offer a structure that is extendable and ready for the next step and we are always thinking about future demands when building an information model. An important mindset to have that ensures that our customers stay ahead.”
Going on his sixth year at Ortelius Ferdia is ready for next-generation knowledge frontiers. Ortelius is expanding quickly, both as a product and consulting company, recruiting many new colleagues, expanding into the US and landing big contracts with large brands. However, Ortelius is still a small company with a ”close-knit family” and ”startup” atmosphere.
”I don’t need to oversell it. I just really like what I do and my colleagues. I always feel pleased heading to and from work. Also having a small son keeps me and my partner busy, so aside from a great job, there is not much time for more. However, if I manage to get some time on my own I enjoy running and reading sci-fi novels”.

Marie Polak is a veteran at Ortelius. In the spring of 2018 she celebrated 15 years with Ortelius. 5,475 days (and counting) have passed with constant progress, problem-solving, laughter and increasing customer success. In short, one could say Marie runs the office. No strain on her since she loves keeping track of both the wellbeing of her colleagues and the company’s finances. Meet Marie Polak, Ortelius’ ”numbers & people” manager.
”When I started at Ortelius back in 2003 I was one of six employees. It’s great to look back on those years and realize we have built a fine company with great products and people in it. One thing has been a constant from the start: people have always been the best part of this company and we have a very friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere at Ortelius, something to protect since it’s a driver for success,” says Marie.

”Thinking about work puts a smile on my face. It makes me happy to walk into our office every morning and meet my colleagues. It may sound like marketing, but it’s true! Our energy comes naturally
Ortelius offers a mixed team of different nationalities, ages, sex and cultures. Regardless of age, this workspace offers a youthful and joyful style. What’s important is to get the job done and make the customer happy, but never at the expense of respect for colleagues or sustainable processes. To support one another and offer a helping hand is the backbone of Ortelius.
”It’s so simple that companies tend to forget it. Make sure people are friendly, happy and motivated and you will build a successful company that lasts. Motivation is something we address daily and train our staff in regularly. A simple thing like positive feedback and positive thinking is fuel for better products and happy customers,” says Marie.
Several times a week Ortelius welcomes customers from some of the largest brands in the world to the cosy, homey office in central Malmö. The highly advanced ”simulation-conference-room” is home to some of the greatest strategies and simulations of the inorigo® platform, displayed on the oversized TV-screens covering almost every inch of the walls. One could depict this room as the ”inorigo® hive of the world.”
Practice what you preach with inorigo®
Since the inorigo® platform is at the very core of Ortelius, inorigo® is, aside from the staff, the hero of the Ortelius story. Naturally, Marie uses the inorigo® platform for her finance and HR processes.
”We all use the inorigo® platform in many different ways. I myself use it for keeping track of the hours our consultants spend on client projects; producing statistics, time reports, prognoses and creating invoices. It gives me fantastic control over my tasks in finance, HR and administration. Since it’s a very advanced platform that can create control and value in every process in a company, we all use the platform for various needs throughout Ortelius. It’s really important that we practice what we preach.”

Helping companies increase their value. That’s one way to describe Johanna’s work. For the past three years she has been a part of the implementation team providing the knowledge platform, inorigo®. And from day one she felt right at home at Ortelius.
”Even during my first job-interview at Ortelius I was convinced that this was the place for me. To me, atmosphere, warmth and nice colleagues are key drivers. This, combined with an interesting job description, made the decision to come aboard easy,” says Johanna Petersson, implementation consultant at Ortelius.
Prior to Ortelius, Johanna had a different career. As a trained dietician Johanna had experience working in the crossfire between human interaction and IT. As time went by she decided to pursue a career change and go back to school. After finishing a university degree as a System Scientist at Lund University, she was ready to start at Ortelius.

He went to law school and holds a master’s degree in Rhetorical Studies from Uppsala University. Leaving a career as a commercial lawyer and head of knowledge management at a large law firm, Kristoffer made a leap of faith and followed his gut feeling. Since 2017, he has spent his days making clients’ companies smarter and more successful, working at a company that he describes as ”refreshingly liberated from hierarchy!”
”It’s not something one comes across often in business life, but at Ortelius one has to look really hard and long to find any traces of hierarchy. Our workplace is very ”flat” and everyone has an important role to fill. Each member is a boss and I believe the success lies in that and how the collective smartness benefits our customers,” says Kristoffer Nordman, Corporate Development Consultant at Ortelius.

As a consultant, Kristoffer has one primary task when meeting with new and existing clients: listening and listening well, in order to ascertain their real needs. In some cases he needs to go well beyond how they are initially described, and translate them into substantial success drivers for the customer. During his career in the legal sector, Kristoffer spent a lot of time crafting strategies aimed at extracting greater efficiency and profitability from knowledge workers. Today he does the same, with one big difference – inorigo®! What we do is truly unique, and in the near future I believe people will say… ”Why didn’t someone come up with this earlier?” This quote belongs to Henrik Olofsson, System engineer in the Business Logic Analysis team at Ortelius.
Four years into his job at Ortelius, Henrik is firmly bolted to the Ortelius world and excited to be part of something unique. Helping Ortelius’ customers reach new levels of knowledge efficiency is teamwork he truly enjoys. In his job as a ”BLA” at Ortelius he gets to work at the intersection of consulting and technical development. Considering the fact that he started learning about programming at the age of 12, and installed his first Linux-system at 13, he admits he is fascinated by what computers and systems can do for human beings and corporations. ”Software development has always been a hobby of mine. Something I still devote myself to, not only at work but also in my spare time. After attaining a Master’s degree in Information Systems at Lund University and having lived in Japan for three years, I was ready to embark on my first full-time steady job and was fortunate to have a teacher who recommended Ortelius to me,” says Henrik Olofsson. A bit like Captain Kirk, going where no man had gone before, Daniel takes his clients deep into the future to lay out the schematics for today’s success. Meet Ortelius’ “future-back-thinker” Daniel Lundin.
”It’s really mind-blowing come to think of it! As early as the seventies, Star Trek showcased handheld communication units for both voice and image. Only by imagining future possibilities can people truly be creative and innovative. And that’s exactly what we can do at Ortelius and what really what excites me the most when helping our customers reach new frontiers in their business,” says Daniel.
After studying engineering at Lund University Daniel embarked on a real venture as an entrepreneur. After founding and running several wind power companies in Sweden and Europe, he cashed out and changed his career track/path. Learning about Ortelius from a student friend he came aboard in 2014. A wise decision apparently.
”Ortelius is perfect for me being as I was, a former company founder and business-oriented person. It suits my entrepreneurial personality and allows initiative and drive. Despite the fact that Ortelius is a mature company we still act very much like a startup, which comes with its own pros and cons. If I were a rigid process junkie I would probably not be the right person for Ortelius.”

”The beauty of inorigo® is really its ability to make clever simulations with ease. It sounds like science fiction but it’s a model that provides concrete and realistic knowledge in both simulation and production modes. I have global customers that now have a highly valuable common point of reference, simply a single point of truth in their knowledge work. It makes a world of difference for their success today and in the future. So to finish off with the Star Trek analogy, I think it’s time for the scriptwriters to come and visit Ortelius and take part in our ”future back” mindset,” Daniel says with a smile.
